"The Roman"

The Roman Road is changing.

Woolworths has closed down because people were not coming and they didn't have enough money. Before them, Safeways closed down. People now have to shop somewhere else, like Asda. It makes the Roman Road a bit different.

Why we think Woolworths closed down.

  Woolworths
pupils and lanfranc road

Olga school is on Lanfranc Road.

Lanfranc Road is by the Roman road.

We like this photo because it has got nearly everyone in it.

Olga Street is near Lanfranc Road, it is next to Olga Primary School and it is a really short street because we used some of it for our new school playground. Joseph's Nan lives here.   Olga Street

post office gone

Why is the Post Office gone?

Now there is only a cash machine. People can't buy stamps, they have to go somewhere else.

The people of Roman Road miss this Post Office. Old people have to go over the canal on the bus.

This is next to the post office. It is a post box. Somebody silly scribbled on the post box. It makes our area messy.   postbox
dust cart   This dust cart is very smelly. It squashes rubbish. That means our streets are going to be clean enough. We are going to be healthy and the cars are not going to slip.

The Second Hand Shop

Jeannette talked to us about the Roman Road. Jeannette runs the second hand shop.

How has the Roman Road Changed?

What do you like about the Roman Road?

What will the Roman be like in the future?

The Roman Road has a market. They have lots of stalls that sell things.

They sell fruit and vegetables, clothes and flowers.

Some stalls sell jewellery.

The Printers

The oldest shop in the Roman Road is the Printers. We asked Gary some questions:

How has the Roman Road changed?

What do you like about Roman Road?

What do you like about the market and stalls?

Tell us about the printers?

Can you tell us about World war Two?

Who were the Suffragettes?

The hairdressers name changed, before it was "One Way" then it changed to "Noor"

The ideas Store has books that you can read and you can go on the computer to do your homework. You can get ideas from there. It used to be called a library. There is a fish tank there.

The Cafe

How has the Roman Road changed?

What do you like about the market?

About the Delight cafe in Roman Road.

Why did you choose to buy a cafe in Roman Road?

motorbike shop   There are lots of motorbikes. they are really fast.
We took a picture in the fish shop. That is a Catfish. That scares me because it's big and it has big teeth like sharks' teeth. It's eyes; too big.   Catfish

The shop has lots of fruit and vegetables.

Where do they get them from?

This shop was closed down. Mariyah says, 'I remember when it was open I was four years old and now I'm seven'. We think it is going to be knocked down and become a block of flats with a smaller shop. It was a good shop and people just used to go and walk there but now they have to catch the bus to Tesco or Asda.   i
Michael is the teacher who takes us to Roman Road, and he goes to other schools too. He is teaching us about recording videos of interviews. We appreciate it being in this group.

Kelly's is a pie and mash shop. Linda (our administrative officer) says,

'Oh, I love pie and mash. I love it because I'm a true East Ender. I could eat it every day. It's one of my treats.'

Joseph says his Dad used to go boxing here.
The crane picks up wood to make a ceiling and a floor and it makes a block of flats.
The crane is very good at lifting heavy building materials.

We saw a police car in the Roman Road.

The police driver wasn't wearing his uniform because he was on an undercover mission.
