City Farms exist to bring the countryside
and its activities to urban people. They generally use otherwise
derelict land and involve local people in their establishment
and maintenance. Hackney Farm is a registered charity and was
established in 1984 on some 1.5 acres of land and buildings leased
for 90 years from the London Borough of Hackney. Originally a
brewery, the buildings are substantial and surround a granite-sett
yard, while areas that were roads and buildings are now used for
growing and grazing. The Farm is a valuable local resource seeking
to involve everyone from this culturally diverse inner-city community.
Animals
We keep as full a range as possible of
traditional farm livestock and you can usually expect to see pigs,
cattle, sheep, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, rabbits, guinea
pigs and other small animals.
We are too small a farm
to be fully organic and free range, but we will not use factory
farm methods. As in any farm the animals contribute to the cost
of their keep, so we sell eggs, wool, hair, meat, yarn, manure,
pet rabbits and other livestock. The community are welcome to
help with routine animal care. Feeding times are 8.30am and 4.30pm.
Gardening
We have large garden where you can help
plant and grow things, or just enjoy the peaceful atmosphere,
We grow herbs, fruit trees, soft fruit bushes and old fashioned
flowers in deep borders. The big square vegetable patch in the
middle produces everything from runner beans to Jerusalem artichokes.
Any excess plants and produce are available for sale.
This is a good place for
a mini-beast hunt, because ours is an organic garden. You can
use the garden to learn about organic controls and companion planting,
or about propagating plants. Along one wall are raised beds, so
you are welcome to garden with us if you use a wheelchair. If
you would like to know more about gardening at the Farm, please
ask.
Animals and Schools
We provide a wide range of services to schools, including 'Hatch
& Brood', 'Rent-A-Pet' and sheep shearing. Schools can also
arrange tours around the Farm. We offer a variety of National Curriculum
orientated educational topics throughout the year. Please ask for
more information.
