Bat information

Bats, the only flying mammal, are often misunderstood. If ever there was an animal that needed a dose of good publicity, it is the bat. Forever associated with graveyards and vampires, this remarkable mammal is unlikely to win any popularity awards.

The two-hour long Bat Walk event is the perfect opportunity for you to see these creatures in their natural habitat. Kenneth Greenway, Local Nature Reserves Officer, will teach you about the different bat species, and a special 'bat-box' will convert the bats' high-frequency squeals into a sound audible by humans.

Interesting Facts about Bats

A third of all land mammal species are bats - that amounts to 1,000 species! There are 16 species of bats found in the UK, eight of which are still recorded in London.

Bats are endangered animals with all 16 species and their roosts being protected by law.

Mother bats have one baby per litter. This 'pup' is born without hair and closed eyes. It suckles milk from its mother and four months later, the pup takes off for its first flight.

Bats species can be grey, white, reddish-brown or brown. Bats sleep upside down. Bats live for up to thirty years.
