HOMELESS PEOPLE IN BRAZIL

The first Favela or shantytown appeared on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro over 100 years ago.
Today there are over 600 Favelas which homeless people have built them selves out of any materials they could find.

A recent campaign is threatening the existence of the Favelas which are home to 1.1 million poor Brazilians. Some wealthy people living nearby are not happy.

There are many problems with living in a favela. To begin with there iis often no electricity or plumbing in a favela. The local government has tried to help but the police have killed a lot of children because they thought they were a waste of space .

Amnesty International have found out some of the views of people who live in the favelas, "Poor people don’t call the police, they’re afraid...They beat you, beat you, beat you then apologise and say it wasn’t you.” On the night of 31 March 2005 a group of men who may have been linked to the police drove through one of brazil's favelas shooting anyone they could find. By 11 pm 29 people were dead. People say this was the worst massacre in Rio de Janeiro's history.

What help has been given by the government?

If you were a rich person would you like homeless people living close by in the favelas?

What do you think people living in Favelas eat for breakfast, supper and dinner?
