Save
the Rainforest now!!! |
| |
|
|
Did you know that as the rainforest are destroyed;
animals and plants are in danger of being extinct (dying out). For example
mountain gorillas in central Africa are threatened by the destruction
of rainforests. Also, although their habitats are now being protected
as nature reserves, there are only about 5,000 tigers left in the world.
As humans build roads and mine through their homes many animals become
trapped as though they were on an island, they become cut off from their
food, shelter and mates. |

It is shocking that the rainforests of
the world are being destroyed at the astonishing rate of 100 acres every
minute, which is the same
size as 60 football pitches. About half of the rainforests
that existed at the beginning of the twentieth century were destroyed
by the year 1999. |

The rainforests of the world are a tremendous resource for many of
the world’s people. Many of the things we buy like fruits, vegetables,
medicines, sugar, cinnamon, cocoa and even kola nuts (which are used
to flavour cola drinks).
There were an estimated ten million Indians living in the Amazonian
Rainforest five hundred years ago. Today there are less than 200,000.
Rainforest covers 7% of the Earth’s land surface. Although they
cover only a small portion of the Earth, tropical rain forests are home
to over 50% of the world’s plants and animals. Fifty species of
rainforest animals, of which most are insects and spiders, become extinct
every day.
Please save the rainforest now!!!
How many
tigers are left in the world?
How many acres of land is destroyed every minute?
How many people live in the rainforests?
