Our community»We are who we are

We are who we are

Who are we? How can we explore and present the history of our families?
How do our lives link to history? Find out what we did and have a go
yourselves at creating an online Museum and take part in a Citizenship Ceremony!

Our after school club, met on Mondays during the Spring Term, 3:30-4:30. We explored our identities through interviews and the use of ICT to create online interactive timelines. You can create your own by downloading and editing the template we used click here

We were introduced to timelines through the BBC website that shows examples of timelines through history and has an interactive one for you to edit (click here www.bbc.co.uk/history/british).
We also looked at the new timeline from the British Museum that
shows objects from the history of the human species, click here.

Our sessions started with a look at the role of interviewing people to find out about their lives.
The children interviewed a puppet of Red Riding Hood’s wolf! To find out the ‘true’ story from
the wolf’s perspective. To find out what the big bad wolf might have said click here.

We also learnt about interviewing people. We learnt about the difference between open and
closed questions, part of which included doing an online activity to practice being a journalist.

We learnt about the importance of interviewing children as part of our history, using
an interview of an eight year old London girl in the 19th century by Henry Mayhew,
for a copy of the activity worksheets and guide Click here

To see what other schools have done with their interviews you can find
ideas on the BBC History site, click here (www.bbc.co.uk/history/walk)

Another outcome of our work was to explore what it meant being a member of our communities of school, Tower Hamlets and the UK.
We designed our own identity shields and presented them to the group.

To download your own guide to Citizenship Ceremonies including the shield activity click here.

We brainstormed what it is to be a member of our different communities and then wrote speeches to welcome the new citizens at Bow Registry Office at a Citizenship Ceremony.
