Panic in Pakistan

On the 9th of October 2005 a dangerous earth quake hit Pakistan. The enormous quake measured 7.6 with its centre in Kashmir.

Old man and son effected by earthquake

Since the laws controlling the buildings aren’t as strict in the U.K. the buildings were not strong enough to handle the risk of an earthquake.

Many children and their teachers were killed as the buildings collapsed. Pakistan’s President Perez Musharraf said 19,000 people were killed and thousands of children were made homeless. In one place 126 calls were made in four-and-a half hours. But on average forty to fifty calls would have been made at each stop as the aid distributions were going on.

By now people hadn’t had food or water for three days or over. It was realised that over two million people could of lost their home. Many people were sleeping rough outside on the hard and filthy floor.

It is feared the death toll could rise if homeless families are left to bear the cold in the mountainous terrain.
