Health and nutrition experts recommend we should all eat five portions
of fruit and vegetables each day. That is why many schools are setting
up Fruit Tuck shops. They provide a chance for children to buy and eat
fruit during break times.
Some
schools have involved their School Council in setting up and running Fruit
Tuck shops. This provides a chance for a School Council to get involved
in something which can make a real difference by improving the health
of young people in school. Some schools even report that teachers use
Fruit Tuck shops - so you could even be improving their health too!
Bromley
Hall is a Special School in Tower Hamlets that has a small number of children
with severe learning difficulties. They have a very effective School Council
which has been involved in setting up a Fruit Tuck Shop. The Council carried
out a survey to find out the most popular fruits, asked children what
price they would be willing to pay for the fruit and used computers to
design labels, logos and posters to promote the idea. A colourful display
in the school showed the results from the surveys in charts and diagrams.
