Taking Action

School Councils go to the United Nations

Have you got something to say about important global issues such as poverty, civil conflict and human rights?

Students from Mulberry School for Girls did have and in 1996 got together to form a student delegation to take part in the International Women's Conference in Beijing, the capital city of China.

"There we were in the hallowed United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York. It was awe inspiring- this is the United Nations of Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, Nelson Mandela and Kofi Annan.
It is also OUR United Nations."

Back at school a U.N support group has been formed to organise activities across all year groups, discuss and debate issues, and share information throughout the school.

"We have learnt so much by participating in the U.N conference. We have made new friends and seen so many different things. We hope we will be able to put into practice what we have learnt by sharing the need to resolve conflicts and prevent conflicts with our school friends, with other schools and with the wider community."
