Early Day Motions

An Early Day Motion or EDM is a request (notice of motion) by an MP for a debate “on an early day” but for which no date has been fixed.

Very few EDMs are debated by parliament.

Generally they are a way for MPs to put on record their opinion on a subject and canvass support for it from fellow Members.

"EDUCATION IN CONFLICT STATES
07.12.2006 Keeble, Sally
That this House welcomes commitments made by the Government to increased funding and support for countries to meet the Millennium Development Goal of universal primary education by 2015; notes with concern that 38 million of the 77 million children still missing out on primary school education are in conflict-affected fragile states; welcomes Save the Children's global Rewrite the Future campaign, which calls on the international community to provide an extra $5.8 billion per year to education in conflict-affected fragile states; calls on the Department for International Development to ensure that 50 per cent. of new education commitments are for conflict-affected fragile states; and calls for education to be included within the first phase in all humanitarian responses."
