Speak Up, Speak Out

(Understanding Democracy)

The School I'd like

After thinking about how they can contribute to their school, the students wrote about the kind of school they would like.

We asked what makes a great primary school, and sent the information off to The Primary Review

They want to discover how schools could change so that children get the best kind of education for the world we live in.
They want to find out what people in England think is the best kind of school for children.
They need to find out what CHILDREN would like, as well as adults.
They have invited children to help with their research so you can tell them what your ideal school would be like.

This is what they said

Students have the chance to write to a special group of people who are looking at English primary schools.

Should we have school?
How could children learn things if there were no school?
If children did not go to school they would not have work to do they will stay on streets or they will have a job with no future
By themselves
With their friends
Set up their own school
The Internet

If we didn’t have school we could be home schooled.
We should have Summerhill schools [children met a pupil from Summerhill Free School, the oldest school in the world based on direct democracy and children’s rights]
We could go to a private school
We could learn at home with our family
We could go to the library

Should there be different holidays?
Going to Sayers Croft is like a holiday – we should do it more often because we learnt how to be friendly and listen to each other
We should have Islamic holidays

Why do you think we have schools?
To learn and have jobs so you can be better at anything
To learn maths, art and all the other subjects
To get good qualifications so that you can get a good job
To be a responsible person when you grow up

Who should be in charge of schools?
David Beckham should be in charge of the school [children have just visited  the Beckham Academy]
The bravest child
Marge or Dipo
The clever children
The person who thinks they are the Best
The children should be in charge
Parents should be in charge
Everyone should be in charge together
The Government should be  charge

Are there things that stop children learning?
Football stickers and cards
Junk food
TV
Toys
Worry when there are problems at home you worry about your mum
Late nights make you sleepy
Sometimes  it doesn’t matter about school too much
Because there is a wedding or Bangladesh holiday
What are the best things to do after school or at weekends?
Play on the computer
Play football
Go on holiday
Watch tv
Play playstation
Kidsclub
Visit relatives

What do you not like about school now?
We want football cards back
We don’t like school uniform
We don’t like when friendships break down
There is less play-time now
We don’t like bullying at our school
We don’t like the small chairs
We don’t like it when schools boring
What kinds of things should children learn in schools?
Things that are appropriate to their interests and the jobs they want
Ping pong!
The things that we learn on residentials
By shopping   and competitions  and things in the city

What  are the best ways of learning things?

Learn with your parents
Listen carefully
Be brave and give your opinion
Smartboards and computers
Listen to each other
Anything else you want to say?
We should have a big football pitch with professional footballers
No more singing assemblies
Long holidays
Fun holidays
