History Overview

Tower Hamlets was ‘created’ in 1965, and is made up of the three (old) Metropolitan Boroughs of Stepney, Poplar and Bethnal Green. Hence early history relates to this area (rather than specific borough borders).

Roman London

The area was probably occupied in pre-Roman times, but there is not much clear evidence.

Before the Romans arrived in Britain, there were Celtic tribes, the tribe that occupied the area around London was called the Catuvellauni.

The soil under London suggests that there would have been some (small) settlements for farming. The first real pieces of evidence of people living in the London area is 2000 years ago, when the Romans invaded Britain.

Roman road links between the city of London (a port) and Colchester (the centre of Roman administration) crossed the River Lea at Old Ford.

From 3rd or 4th Century evidence has been found of farming settlements – as East London supplied much of the food for the city from early days.
