She was born in 1892. She was the middle one
of three sisters. Her sister Kathleen came to visit our school in the
year 1957 on the 22nd of October.
When Marion was a child she joined a story writing group. She used to
entertain her sisters at night by reading her stories to them.
She was also very good at art. Her teacher liked her art so much that
he sent her to another school in Birmingham where she would learn more.
Then she got a certificate that said she could be an art teacher.
She got a job in a secondary school. This is where she started thinking
up better ways to teach art and handwriting. Other people thought her
ideas were terrific. People liked her ideas about playing music while
children drew and painted. They liked her ideas about making school exciting
and beautiful. When she talked about her ideas to grown-ups, loads of
people wanted to listen.
These days she is best remembered for making up a style of writing which
was taught in lots of schools all around the world. She is also known
for ideas about teaching art. She saw handwriting as a type of art.
Our school was originally known as The Senrab Street School, but was renamed
Marion Richardson Primary after a lovely lady who tried her best to make
school better for children.
