Around Our School

Senrab Street

Our school is right on the end of Senrab Street.

These houses are quite old. They are called Edwardian terrace houses. They were built in 1907 and are the same age as our school. (Senrab is Barnes spelt backwards, Mr. Barnes designed the streets when they were built.)

Each house has a coal hole in front of the house. In the old days when people used coal as a fuel to heat their houses, the coal was delivered through this hole. The coal would fall down to the cellar where it was kept until it was needed.

If you look at these coal hole lids carefully you can see different patterns and designs. These designs showed which company the people in the house bought their coal from.

Head Street
Head Street is the name of the street that connects Commercial Road to Senrab Street.

This is a pre-fab hut near our school on Head Street. The East End was hit hard when the Germans bombed it in the Blitz. A great deal of housing was destroyed. Little pre-fab huts like this were put in so that people had somewhere to live. A lady still lives in this one. She takes a great deal of care with her garden.

There are not many of these huts still around. They have been replaced with better housing.

These are flats that are part of a housing estate. They are right near our school.

Shadwell Basin

We're only a short walk away from Shadwell Basin where there is an outdoor activity centre.

In the background of this picture, you can see the big buildings of Canary Wharf.

We have some great friends at Canary Wharf. Some wonderful people from Standard Charter and Willis come to our school once a week and help children with their reading.

Peter Wade on behalf of Canary Wharf has been very kind and helps support Dance and Gymnastics in our area.

Limehouse Basin

Limehouse Basin is now a marina. Long ago, Shadwell Basin and Limehouse Basin were where ships and boats carrying cargo pulled in to deliver goods from all over to the warehouses near the Thames.
