Dr Barnardo

Doctor Barnardo

In Victorian times, there was a man called Dr Barnardo who devoted his life to helping the children that lived on the streets.

His early days

He was born in 1845, in Dublin, Ireland with his half sister, Sophie. She looked after him because his mother was much too weak to help.

Life at school

Later, when he started school, Doctor Barnardo still looked very small. Children the same as him looked bigger.

However Thomas was a bright boy as Sophie helped to teach him how to write and read. Then a few days later he was sent to Sunday school. The only problem was hopeless at games and at exams as he thought he did not need to read any books.

Moving to London

After leaving school, Dr Barnardo moved to London to study at a missionary school where he saw hundreds of homeless children sleeping on streets. He felt sorry for them and it was during this time he decided to help these people.

The first boys and girls home.

Not very long after Doctor Barnardo started up boys and girls homes.

Upstairs in some homes they had beds to sleep in and down stairs they had a classroom where they were taught carpentry, tailoring and shoe making.

Dr Barnardo's today

However, Dr Barnardo died in 1905
When he was only 60 years old.

Since then lots of children's homes have been named after him and there is an organisation called Barnardo's that has now been working to improve childrens lives for over 130 years.

Dr Barnardo believed that every child has the right to a secure and loving childhood. He would be very pleased to see that other people still believe in this today.

Hello again we think Dr. Barnardo should be spelt like this.

Year 6 M Doha College Primary     on 24/01/2006

EET says: Yes, you are correct. Dr. Barnardo is the correct spelling. However we have kept the children's incorrect spellings, as our database shows that hundreds of children searching for him spell his name incorrectly.

My father was a Bernardo child who came to Canada and then the US. I like your site and pictures.

EET says: Thank you for the message, Eileen. If you know anyone who has any pictures of those days, we would love to show them here.
