POPLAR PARTNERSHIP EiC ACTION ZONE

Project Plan: Equal to the Challenge

Brief description of the project:

An extended History curriculum offered to gifted and talented pupils from Year 6 from each of the PP Primary schools. 5 pupils to be offered places from each school; 25 in total. Paula Hailstone will prepare the teaching materials (Educational consultant and history teacher). Janet Orchard (Motivator teacher) and Sophie Mackay (Educational consultant for HEC with specific responsibility for www.eastendtalking.org.uk) will teach the unit. The elements of the course to be delivered using ICT will be supported by CLC staff and pupils support will be required from some classroom assistants to be negotiated with schools. (See project outline attached)

The project is one of a series of projects funded across Tower Hamlets which aims to extend most able pupils in Year 6. It offers opportunities for PP to engage with another Excellence in Cities initiatives as well as support teaching and learning across the transition Key Stage 2 - 3.

Time span: August - December 2002

Personnel involved: JO; Paula Hailstone: Sophie Mackay; Lisa Gorman, City Learning Centre staff, Year 6 pupils supported by classroom assistants.

Estimation of cost: £1,300 grant from OOSHL; Motivator teacher time; HEC time (East-end talking project) and technical support offered by the CLC; classroom assistant overtime if applicable

Aims of project:

Extend historical skills of the most able Year 6 pupils to appreciate the difference between the past and the present as preparation for Year 7 curriculum.

Access resources of other EiC and LBTH initiatives

Develop writing for an audience using ICT that can be presented on the www.eastendtalking.org.uk website.

Facilitate meeting of pupils and staff across 5 schools

Outcomes:

Improved learning about local history will take place across partnership primary schools in preparation for KS3.

Most able pupils will benefit from an extended curriculum

Work of 25 PP pupils will be celebrated on the www.eastendtalking.org.uk website

25 pupils and at least two PP classroom assistants will know how to get to the CLC and will have had the opportunity to use the resources. This will help us to ascertain how feasible use of the facilities is for PP schools.

Success Criteria:

Evaluation of lessons by pupils and classroom assistants and project providers is positive

Work appears on the www.eastendtalking.org.uk website

Pupils' work is better (assessed by teachers as improved) due to extra teaching inputs

These pupils perform better in history at KS3. (Unable to ascertain this success criteria during the life of the EiC AZ.)

Information known

Information needed

Grant has been made by OOSHL

CLC, HEC, Motivator teacher project can all support this initiative. Steering Group have supported project in principle.

Will schools release classroom assistants to support the project? What costs, if any, might this incur? How many sessions will need to be supported by the Primary ICT Adviser? Is she available?

Availability of 25 places on course is agreed

Which pupils are to be offered places? How will G&T be measured? Classroom teachers agreement to be sought.

CLC agree in principle to host two sessions

Are these times available? S.M. is investigating. What venue will be most appropriate for the first two sessions? How long should these two sessions be?

Sessions need to take place Monday p.m. due to availability of JO & SM.

Is this convenient with primary schools?

PZH to prepare all subject specific materials for the course.

S.M will need to liase with PZH to ensure book loans are organised for the CLC sessions

Digital cameras, including a digital video camera will be needed during session two (and one for practice?)

Where will these cameras come from and will SM be responsible for their collection and return?

CLC will collate all pupils' work and provide technical support to ensure it goes onto the website.

Will there be sufficient time for the pupils' to complete their work in the allocated sessions? How long will it take to prepare this for the website?

Review (by interested parties against the Aims; Outcomes & Success Criteria)

What Worked Well (WWW)

Areas for Improvement (AfI)

Teaching materials were well organised and well prepared. Session One linked well with the Secondary curriculum and developed students’ historical  skills. The extra drama session at the end engaged students’ interest.

Students valued the opportunity to meet young people from other schools and to work together on work that extended the regular curriculum. Relationships between children from different schools developed well over the project.

24 pupils have visited the CLC and were impressed by the facilities. They know how to access the CLC on public transport making it more likely that they might use the facilities themselves in the future

Materials were completed for the eastendtalking.org website so that the students’ achievements will be celebrated.

Good working relationships were developed between HEC, CLC, OOSHL and PP team members.

The materials were not sufficiently challenging for Gifted and Talented Year 6 pupils. Students were not fully engaged in all the sessions. ICT equipment was not always working

One student did not have the right attitude towards the work and arguably did not meet the G&T criteria. Schools need to have clear G&T criteria when identifying candidates for the programme.

The launch will offer an opportunity for staff from PP schools to visit the CLC

Need to address issues of sustainable staffing: if the project were to run again, who would teach it and when?
