WHO

painted the Mural?

The mural was started in 1976. It was painted by a number of different local artists. When they were planning the design for the mural the artists carried out historical research into the events that took place at the battle of Cable Street by looking at books, photographs and films about the event.

The mural was finished in 1993 but was vandalised with paint and graffiti many times while it was being painted. The vandalism was expensive and time consuming to remove but now it has been painted with a special varnish to protect it from future attacks.

The mural is a powerful reminder of the victory over fascism that took place at the Battle of Cable Street on 4th October 1936.

Looking at the pictures on the computer they bring back memories when I was eight yrs old standing at the window of our house at 221 Cable St and Cable street was crowded with people and police riding horses. My mother pulled me away from the window and closed the shutters. I have been back a few times to Cable st and each time I have visited something else has changed. The library was gone, the Town Hall where I used to watch the goings on from the bedroom window directly across from the hall of when they had balls and the lord mayor would ride up in his coach and when we used to attend the high holy day services and now it became a social service center. The park is gone where I spent days swinging on the maypole on my way to Dellow st school. I remember going with my mother shopping in Watney st. All the vendors with there barrows selling their wares. I remember so many things when I lived in Cable st and now it is not the same only in my memories
