Getting Started

"Getting Your Digital Video project Started"

Storyboards
Start by teaching the pupils how to storyboard their film.

See an example storyboard
Open a blank storyboard to print
Take some stills or scans of the storyboards as they can often be incorporated into the finished films to good effect. It is useful to have a discussion about composition at this stage: what do we want the viewers to be looking at and how are we going to ensure that they are?

As your project progresses make sure you back up your film either by exporting it back to a labelled DV tape in the camera or by saving it to a back up disk. Film projects are frequently deleted from hard drives because they take up so much room!

Wherever possible have footage from more than one angle and mix up long shots and close ups. This will allow the pace of the editing to be determined by you rather than by the material in the shot.

Rhythm
You can establish rhythms in your editing e.g. long shot, long shot, close up, long shot, long shot, close up etc. As is the case with rhythm in poetry or music this will allow you to determine the emphasis.

Tone
As you come to edit each mastershot think carefully about the tone you want to set for the scene and then add music, voice over, transitions, titles and so on to achieve that effect. Again you can use patterns in the framing, use of colour, movement, camera movement and sound to establish connections and emphasise particular elements inside (or outside) the frame.
